Leipzig

Leipzig (pop. 500,000) is one of the most dynamic and prosperous cities in the eastern part of Germany, a vibrant host of trade shows, congresses and the centre of commerce of the Federal State of Saxony. Leipzig is also known for its lovely Renaissance and Baroque buildings in the city centre, its diverse cultural, arts and nightlife scene and for its exquisite shopping opportunities in historical, fully restored trading centres and malls.

Some Highlights

Altes Rathaus
The Old Town Hall is one of the most beautiful buildings of the German Renaissance, built between 1556 and 1557. It hosts the City History Museum, one of Germany's largest cultural history museums with a particularly rich collection.

Bach-Archiv Leipzig
Johann Sebastian Bach was Leipzig's musical director and choirmaster of the St Thomas Boys Choir between 1723 and 1750. The Bach-Archiv Leipzig is widely recognized as the world's most important centre of Bach scholarship. Comprising a research institute, a library and a museum, the Bach Archive today occupies the historic Bosehaus complex at St. Thomas Square, opposite the church.

Mendelssohn House
The only surviving residence of the composer Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, and the place where he died. Today, Mendelssohn House is a museum, where many exhibits including his original furniture are on display.

Leipzig Gewandhaus
The world-famous Gewandhaus Orchestra was founded in 1743. Most renowned among the chamber music ensembles of the Orchestra is the Gewandhaus Quartet. Founded in 1809, it is the oldest string quartet in the world.

Leipzig Opera House
The Leipzig Opera House looks back to a tradition of more than 300 years. It is the second oldest German Opera. Dedicated to the heritage of Richard Wagner, Leipzig Opera continues to surprise with staging events on a European scale.

Auerbachs Keller
Johann Wolfgang Goethe studied in Leipzig between 1765 and 1768. A scene from his celebrated "Faust" cycle made "Auerbach's Cellar" in the MŠdlerpassage one of the most famous classic restaurants in Germany.

Zum Arabischen Coffe Baum
This is one of the oldest surviving coffee houses in Europe. Today it is restaurant, cafe, and museum in one, documenting 300 years of Saxony's coffee and cultural history in 15 rooms.

Leipzig Central Station
With 26 platforms, Leipzig Central Station is the largest terminal station, and one of the largest passenger-railway stations in Europe. It was opened in 1915. After finishing modernization in 1998, Leipzig Central Station is one of Germany's most modern stations with a shopping and service centre on three levels.

The Leipzig Fair - Leipziger Messe
The Leipzig Fair is known as the "mother of all trade fairs" and opened its new exhibition centre in 1996. In 1997 the trade fair celebrated the 500th anniversary of being granted the "Imperial Right to Hold Trade Fairs".
