:: Germany > TRAVEL INFO > Scenic Routes Scenic Routes Germany has to offer many attractions. To explore the country as a whole you need to have at least 30 days or more and must be willing to drive (or travel by train) around 3000 kilometers. If you have less time available you should rather choose to see only part of the country and decide for one of the three proposed routes. The Northern Lowlands Route (Orange) The route starts in DŸsseldorf, an ideal entry port with direct flights from Cape Town (LTU). Visit the vibrant Altstadt and take a stroll along the Rhine River. A day trip will show you Cologne with its famous cathedral. Head north then towards the North Sea. Visit Norderney or other East Frisian Islands. Drive southeast then to the Hanseatic City of Bremen with its magnificent Medieval city centre. Hamburg - also a Hanseatic city - is only an hour's drive away. See the harbour, the Alster Lake and the Reeperbahn nightlife. Proceed to the Baltic Sea and visit LŸbeck with its numerous historical buildings, Schwerin with its stunning castle, see Germany's most beautiful island of RŸgen with its famous limestone cliffs. The route ends in Berlin, Germany's dynamic capital. Minimum time required: 10 days |

| The Southeastern Route (Blue) After having experienced Berlin, head south and visit the beautiful baroque city of Dresden on the Elbe River. Travel through Thuringia to Weimar, the cradle of German literature and enlightenment. Head south for Bavaria and visit the magnificent historical cities of Nuremberg, Regensburg and Passau. Munich lies only two hours southwest. From here a day trip to Neuschwanstein, the famous fairy-tale castle built by King Ludwig II, is worth a visit. Another rewarding day excursion would be the historical city of Salzburg in Austria. Minimum time required: 10 days The Southwestern Route (Green) Spend a day or two in the Bavarian capital of Munich, visit a beer garden and the city's world-class museums. Drive to Neuschwanstein Castle and then along the beautiful Lake Constance through the AllgŠu to the cosy university city of Freiburg. Head north throught the Black Forest and further to historic Heidelberg on the Neckar River. Travel the "Romantic Rhine" route up to Koblenz with its many castles. Turn southwest along the meandering Mosel River to the historic city of Trier, which was founded by the Romans. Follow the Rhine River up to Cologne. A day trip will take you the Aachen with its splendid Cathedral built by Charlemagne. Minimum time required: 10 days |
