When to Travel
When to Travel
here are interesting things to see and to do in Germany all year round, especially if you are interested in culture or city life. However, the best time to visit the country are the summer months – June to September. The weather can also be pleasant in spring, especially in May and in autumn until the end of October.
Summer School Holidays
The main school holidays in Germany are called Sommerferien and lie in the summer months. Children get about six weeks off then. The dates vary from state to state. Roads get very crowded then, especially when the holidays start in North Rhine-Westphalia, the most population-rich state.
Most people flock to the south, to Bavaria, Austria and further to Italy which results in heavy traffic on all southbound Autobahnen (freeways). Airports are also quite busy then as many Germans prefer to fly to one of the many holiday destinations around the Mediterranean Sea.
Winter Season
The snow and winter sports season in Germany starts mid-December and ends in March. The best months for skiing in southern Germany usually are January, February until mid-March.
Winter school holidays normally start just before Christmas and end mid-January, depending on the state.
The famous German Christmas Markets usually open in early December, some even by the end of November.
